The short version: a baby can usually come along from about three months, provided you use a Maxi-Cosi with the right adapter or a special baby seat. The short answer by age
The age at which your baby can come along depends on how you transport them. This is the overview we use in the shop:

Why three months, and not a day earlier without reason
It's all about your baby's neck and back muscles. In the first few months, these aren't yet strong enough to absorb vibrations and shocks properly. Around three months, most babies have developed enough to go along in a good Maxi-Cosi setup. Manufacturers and experts therefore stick to that limit.
Important: three months is a guideline, not a starting signal. Every child grows at their own pace. If you're unsure whether your baby's neck is strong enough yet, consult the clinic or your GP before taking the first ride. They know your child's development and can give you specific advice.
The Maxi-Cosi adapter: the common solution for the first few months
The most common way to transport a baby from three months onwards is a Maxi-Cosi in a special adapter. You mount this adapter in the box and click the car seat firmly into it. The Maxi-Cosi absorbs shocks and your baby lies low and stable, just above the bottom of the box.

The baby seat as an alternative
In addition to the Maxi-Cosi, there is a baby seat that you mount permanently in the box. These seats are specially designed for transport on a bike. Your baby lies sheltered in it, facing you. The difference with the Maxi-Cosi: you can't just click a baby seat out to carry it with you. For those who mainly cycle from A to B and don't need the car seat function, this is not an issue.

Out and about safely with your baby: in practice
The seat is only part of the story. The rest is in how you ride and how you build it up. A few things we always tell new cargo bike parents:
- Build it up slowly. Keep the first rides short, for example, half an hour. Your baby needs to get used to it, and you need to get used to riding with a box in front.
- Check the click every time. Do you hear a clear click when the seat is in the adapter? Then it's secure. If you're in doubt, check it again.
- Choose smooth cycle paths. Avoid bumpy terrain so your baby feels fewer shocks. The cycle paths through the Statenkwartier are more pleasant to ride than the cobblestones of the old city center.
- Wrap your child up warm. You feel the wind in the box. A footmuff and a hat make all the difference, even in spring.
- Watch out for slippery conditions in winter. In case of black ice or snow, it's better to leave the cargo bike at home. Safety comes first.
About helmets: for children in a cargo bike, a bicycle helmet is not legally required in the Netherlands. Many parents still choose one as soon as their child sits on the bench, for extra protection. For a baby in a Maxi-Cosi, a helmet is not necessary because the seat itself already supports and encloses the head.
