Safety: what should parents know?
Since the report on Babboe in 2024, parents are understandably cautious with cargo bikes. All brands we sell (Urban Arrow, Carqon, Batavus) have published extensive tests and meet strict safety requirements. We do not sell models that are in doubt.
Three rules of thumb for safe cycling with your child:
- Always use the belts — even for short trips.
- A bike helmet is not legally required for children in a cargo bike, but it is recommended.
- Always put the cargo bike on the kickstand with the brakes activated when getting in and out.
Frequently asked questions
From what age can a child go in an electric cargo bike?
From approximately 9 months, provided you use a Maxi-Cosi adapter for babies or a supportive toddler seat. For children who can sit: as soon as they can sit upright firmly on their own, they can go in the box with the belts. Ask in the store for the right adapters for your model.
How many children are allowed in a cargo bike at most?
That depends on the model. The Urban Arrow Family and Carqon Classic can transport up to 4 children with the right accessories. The Batavus Fier is suitable for 2 children. The maximum load weight (usually 80 - 100 kg in the box) is leading.
Is an electric cargo bike safe in traffic?
Yes, provided you choose a quality model and use the belts. Children sit low in a cargo bike — within the wheelbase — making them better protected than, for example, in a bike trailer behind the bike. We always recommend a test ride to get used to the different steering feel.
What is the range with children in the box?
With a fully loaded cargo bike and two children on board, you drive an average of 40 to 60 km on a single battery charge. For most parents in The Hague, that is more than enough for a few days of use. You can often order a second battery for longer trips.
Which electric cargo bike is best for one child?
