(Checklist 2026)

Buying an electric cargo bike is a major decision — you easily spend €4,000 to €7,000, and ideally, you'll have it for 7 to 10 years. Making the wrong choice hurts. In this guide, we list the 10 most important points to consider, based on the questions we hear every week in our shop in The Hague.

We avoid the standard 'guide' you read elsewhere. No vague price ranges, but concrete advice and the pitfalls we see parents mistakenly fall for.

The short checklist (for those in a hurry)

Two or three wheels? — depending on maneuverability versus stability

Motor type — mid-drive motor is almost always the right choice

Battery capacity — 500 Wh is a good starting point

Box material — EPP, plastic, or wood, each with their pros and cons

Safety — belts, disc brakes, low edges

Drivetrain — chain versus belt

Brand and warranty — go for a local dealer

Number of passengers / load — choose based on need, not 'just in case'

Test ride — not optional, definitely do it

Service and maintenance — who helps you if something breaks?

Below we explain each point. Would you rather chat directly? Schedule a test ride and we'll walk through it together.

1. Two wheels or three wheels?

This is often the first choice. A two-wheel cargo bike (like Urban Arrow Family or Carqon Classic) is more maneuverable, lighter, and faster — perfect for city traffic. A three-wheeler is more stable when stationary and at low speeds, but it's heavier to pedal, wider, and steers differently than a regular bike.

Our experience:

Two-wheeler: 90% of families choose this — it feels more natural.

Three-wheeler: mainly interesting for entrepreneurs with heavy loads, people with balance issues, or if you often ride with 3+ children at once.

2. Which motor should you choose?

For a cargo bike, a mid-drive motor is almost always the right choice. It's located at the pedals, provides natural support, and ensures better weight distribution. Front-wheel or rear-wheel motors are mainly found in cheaper models and we advise against them for heavy use.

Well-known motors:

Bosch Active Plus: more than enough for the flat Netherlands, like The Hague. Fits most Urban Arrow Family models.

Bosch Cargo Line / Performance Line: extra power for heavy loads, hills, and coastal headwinds.

Bosch Smart System: latest generation, app integration, higher efficiency. Standard on Urban Arrow FamilyNext and Carqon.

3. Battery: how big should it be?

A battery is measured in watt-hours (Wh). The larger it is, the further you can ride — but also: the more expensive it is.

400 Wh — approx. 35 - 50 km. Enough for short city trips.

500 Wh — 50 - 70 km. More than enough for most families.

625 Wh — 70 - 90 km. Recommended for daily intensive use or longer distances.

Dual battery (2× 500 Wh) — 100+ km. For entrepreneurs or delivery services.

Don't forget: heavy loads, cold weather, strong headwinds, and pedaling hard shorten the range. Calculate your weekly distance in advance and choose the battery accordingly.

4. Which box material: wood, plastic, or EPP?

Three materials dominate the market:

Wood (Babboe-style): traditional, beautiful, but requires maintenance (annual lacquering).

Plastic / composite (Carqon): light, weather-resistant, easy to clean.

EPP (Urban Arrow): high-tech foam, strong, insulating, absorbs shocks in an accident. Our favorite for transporting children.

5. Safety: which points to really check

Since the Babboe safety drama of 2024, parents are extra alert — and rightly so. Check these:

Three-point belts per seat (no two-point)

Hydraulic disc brakes front and rear (no roller brakes on a cargo bike with children)

A box with a raised edge and a low entry — children shouldn't be able to fall out, but should be able to get in and out easily

Good visibility: standard lighting front and rear, often also in the box

ART-2 or ART-3 approved lock (required for most insurance policies)

Walk or park assist: walking at low speed next to the bike with motor support — very nice when going up a ramp or curb

6. Chain or belt drive?

A traditional chain is cheaper, but needs to be lubricated, gets dirty, and breaks after 5,000 - 8,000 km. A belt drive (like Gates Carbon Drive) is more expensive, but almost maintenance-free, cleaner, and quieter. Almost all Carqon models and the Urban Arrow Pro line work with a belt. An extra cost of €300 - €500 that more than pays for itself in the long run.

7. Brand and warranty: choose a local dealer

Many people think: I'll buy online, it's cheaper. In practice, we notice this often becomes an expensive lesson. Ordering parts, shipping, no loaner bike during repairs, remote warranty handling — it's a hassle.

A local dealer offers:

Guided test ride

On-site warranty handling

Loaner bike while yours is being repaired

Personal advice on accessories and upgrades

Often pick-up and delivery service for maintenance

At our shop in The Hague, we are dealers for Urban Arrow, Carqon, and Batavus — three brands each known for their build quality and long lifespan.

8. Number of passengers: choose based on actual need

A common mistake: 'we have one child now, but maybe another one will come, so let's buy the big one right away.' Sounds logical, but in practice it means: spending more money, more weight (heavier cycling), bigger parking problems.

Better framework:

1 child: a longtail like the Urban Arrow Breeze or a compact Shorty is more than enough.

2 children up to 8 years: Urban Arrow Family Active or Batavus Fier.

3+ children or multiple families at once: Urban Arrow FamilyNext or Carqon Classic.

Urban Arrow Breeze Longtail | Sage Green

Voor het gezin met één kind

Vanaf € 5.150. Service and maintenance: look ahead

An electric cargo bike requires annual maintenance — chain lubrication, checking brakes, battery diagnosis, tires. Many dealers (including us) offer a maintenance contract, often with pick-up and delivery service. No time to come to the shop? We'll pick it up, fix it, and bring it back.

Bonus: 5 pitfalls we often see

Choosing the absolute cheapest model only to regret the weaker motor or poor brakes a year later.

Choosing the absolute most expensive model 'just in case' — while you only have one child and ride in a flat city.

Buying a second-hand cargo bike from a private individual without having the battery and motor checked — replacement easily costs €700+.

Forgetting to check if the cargo bike fits in your shed or storage — some models are 2.5 meters long!

Not buying an ART-2 lock and thinking 'it'll be fine' — most insurers won't cover theft then.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: Urban Arrow or Carqon?

Both are top-tier — it depends on your preference. A 'cheap' one with a depleted battery ends up being more expensive than new.

What if I regret it after purchase?

With us, you have a 14-day cooling-off period after purchase.
