Why does one cargo bike cost more than another?
Four factors together determine 80% of the price:
1. The motor (€800 - €2,000 difference)
A Bosch Active Line is sufficient for flat terrain and light loads. A Bosch Cargo Line (or Performance Line) provides significantly more pedal assistance and torque — especially nice if you often ride with a full box or in the hills towards Wassenaar. The price difference between those two motors? Easily €1,000 - €1,500 on the purchase price.
2. The battery (€400 - €1,000 difference)
A standard 500 Wh battery covers about 50 - 60 km on a single charge. Want to go towards 80 - 100 km? Then you're looking at 625 Wh or even a dual-battery system. Expect to pay €800 - €1,000 extra for a dual-battery setup.
3. Gears and drivetrain (€300 - €800 difference)
A traditional chain drive with a derailleur is cheaper but requires more maintenance. Combining an Enviolo stepless hub gear with a Gates belt drive means: almost no maintenance, quieter, and lasts longer. Carqon and the Urban Arrow Pro models use this system as standard.
4. Materials and finish
An EPP box (Urban Arrow) is lightweight and absorbs shocks. A composite box (Carqon) has a more luxurious finish. Aluminium frames are lighter than steel. Hydraulic disc brakes stop better than roller brakes. These are all small amounts, but added together, you'll easily end up €500 - €1,000 higher.
Additional costs to keep in mind
The purchase price isn't the whole story. For a new electric cargo bike, count on these extra costs:
| Cost item | Indication | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| ART-2 lock | €150 - €300 | Required for insurance |
| Insurance | €15 - €35/month | Theft + all-risk recommended |
| Rain cover / tent | €200 - €450 | Almost indispensable in NL |
| Maintenance service | €100 - €200 per year | First service often free at the dealer |
| Battery replacement | €400 - €800 | After ~5-7 years |
| Extra accessories | €100 - €500 | Maxi-Cosi adapter, rain suit, cushions |
For the first year, count on about €500 - €900 in extras and running costs on top of the purchase price. After that, you're looking at around €300 - €500 per year.
Second-hand or refurbished: how much does that save?
A good second-hand electric cargo bike is usually 30 - 50% cheaper than a new one. Important: only buy from a dealer who has technically checked the bike and provides a warranty on the battery and motor. A 'bargain' on Marktplaats can easily turn into a replacement of a written-off battery (€600+).
At our shop in The Hague, you'll constantly find a changing selection of refurbished electric cargo bikes — with warranty and service.
Leasing: fixed amount per month
A popular option since 2024: leasing a cargo bike through your employer (Lease a Bike, Bike2Work, etc.) or private lease. You pay a fixed monthly amount — often including maintenance, insurance, and roadside assistance — and don't have to pay €5,000+ all at once.
Example calculation:
- Purchase price Urban Arrow Family: €4,750
- Term: 60 months
- Monthly amount (incl. maintenance and insurance): approximately €95 - €130/month
- Tax benefit via employer: up to 40% depending on salary bracket
We work with the largest lease providers. Request a quote on our bike leasing page; we'll be happy to calculate it for you.
Business purchase: VAT deduction and investment schemes
For entrepreneurs, an electric cargo bike is extra attractive fiscally:
- VAT deductible (21% effective discount)
- Investment allowance (KIA) for investments > €2,601
- MIA/Vamil for some cargo models — check the current Environmental List
This is interesting for our Urban Arrow Cargo L and Cargo XL (from €6,999 / €7,499 excl. VAT). Ask your accountant about the current regulations.
How much do you save compared to a (second) car?
According to the Consumentenbond, owning a small second-hand car in the Netherlands costs an average of €350 - €500 per month (depreciation, insurance, fuel, parking, maintenance). An electric cargo bike — depreciated over 7 years — costs you roughly €100 - €150 per month all-in.
For city dwellers in The Hague who use their car mainly for short trips within the city, a cargo bike often pays for itself within 3 to 4 years. Plus: no more parking stress in the Archipelbuurt or the Statenkwartier.

Frequently asked questions about the price of an electric cargo bike
What is the cheapest electric cargo bike at Bakfiets Centrum?
Currently, the Urban Arrow Shorty Performance at €3,999 (down from €5,499) is our most competitively priced new model. For the Batavus Fier 2, you pay from €4,250. Second-hand often starts around €2,500 - €3,000.
Why are electric cargo bikes so expensive?
A good electric cargo bike contains a strong mid-drive motor (€400 - €1,500 at manufacturer level), a large battery (€200 - €500), hydraulic disc brakes, a reinforced frame for the extra weight, and extensive safety features for child transport. On top of that come assembly, R&D, distribution, and retail margin.
Is an electric cargo bike worth the investment?
For families in urban areas who replace one or even their second car with the bike: yes, most people earn it back within 3 - 4 years. For occasional use (a few times a month): consider renting first.
How much does maintenance for an electric cargo bike cost per year?
Count on €150 - €250 per year for the annual service, minor repairs, and wear parts (tyres, brake pads, chain/belt). We offer maintenance service with pick-up and delivery in The Hague — handy if you don't have time to drop by yourself.
How much does a new battery for an electric cargo bike cost?
A replacement battery costs roughly €400 - €800, depending on capacity and brand. A Bosch PowerPack 500 is around €600. A good battery lasts 5 - 7 years with normal use.
